Joan M. Prasse, DVM is a summa cum laude graduate of Marshall University and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is the wife of Robert Prasse, II, D.V.M., M.D. Early in their marriage they ran Colonial Animal Clinic, an American Animal Hospital Association accredited hospital in Flatwoods, KY. When Dr. Robert decided to go back to school to “specialize in one species”, that is, humans (He is now “The Country Doctor – –with his office just upstairs!), Dr. Joan became founder and president of Advanced Veterinary Services, PSC, a corporation which owned and operated four veterinary hospitals in Kentucky and Ohio. In 1995, Dr. Prasse sold her veterinary empire and, in 1998, moved with Dr. Robert and their three children to Locust Grove, VA. They established Paradocs Farm, where they raise and train horses. Dr. Prasse has practiced locally since 1998, providing veterinary care for dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, and goats. She has a strong interest in surgery, medicine, canine and equine reproduction, and preventative health care.
Designing and building Paradocs Animal Hospital has been a labor of love, enabling Dr. Prasse to once again be in practice with a family member, her daughter, Dr. Shauna Riggs.
Malora Roberts, DVM joined our team at Paradocs Animal Hospital in June 2020. She previously worked as a mixed animal veterinarian in Northern Virginia but transplanted to the area with her husband Kyle, their two dogs (Mida and Dexter), and three cats (Ziggy, Sips, and Kiwi). A Maryland native, she received her undergraduate degree in Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland and completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. Dr. Roberts has a passion for all animals including farm animals, horses, dogs, and cats. She has a special interest in surgery, medicine, preventative wellness, and geriatric care. In her spare time Dr. Roberts enjoys riding her Irish Sporthorse “Clancy,” reading, knitting, rock climbing, and attending University of Maryland basketball games (Go Terps!).
Shauna (Prasse) Riggs, DVM graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech and Virginia/Maryland School of Veterinary Medicine. After literally growing up in a veterinary practice, she brings a wealth of experience and compassion as well as knowledge to the high-tech Paradocs Animal Hospital. Her special interests include wellness, surgery, nutrition, and dentistry for small animals and equine. Dr. Riggs resides in Locust Grove with her husband, two small boys, and the family dog, “Gizmo”. An accomplished horsewoman, Dr. Riggs has won numerous awards for showing horses in nearly every discipline and enjoys spending any time out of the office in the saddle.
Hailey Light, DVM joined Paradocs in the summer of 2019. Growing up in a Navy family, she has lived all over the US and abroad. She attended Ross University for vet school, did her clinical year at the University of Illinois, and then completed an equine internship at Mississippi State University and a small animal internship at a major specialty hospital in Houston, TX. Although Dr. Light enjoys seeing patients of all species, her passion has always been horses, with special interests in lameness, imaging, and surgery. She currently shares her home with two cats, two dogs (a coconut retriever and a silken windhound), and two horses (a paint mare and a POA/QH filly). In her spare time, she enjoys riding, painting, and dog sports.
We provide limited urgent care during business hours for conditions like vomiting, diarrhea, minor wounds, and suspected infections. For life-threatening emergencies outside our hours, such as hit-by-car, severe bleeding, or difficulty breathing, you’ll need a 24-hour emergency hospital. We can provide referrals and coordinate follow-up care.
Call our office to schedule mobile services. We’ll discuss your animal’s needs and set an appointment time. Our veterinarians travel to properties throughout Locust Grove, Orange County, Fredericksburg, and Culpeper. Emergency farm calls are handled based on availability.
Bring any previous medical records, a list of current medications or supplements, and a fresh fecal sample if possible (for parasite testing). For exotic pets, photos of their enclosure setup help us assess environmental factors affecting health. Write down any questions beforehand so you don’t forget during the appointment.
